Welcome to the Empire Justice Training Center where you will find Continuing Legal Education and other training courses as well as resource materials designed to support your work and professional development.  This page contains the most recent web courses, publications & periodicals, to view more please click on the links in the menu on the left.

Empire Justice is dedicated to providing legal services advocates and pro bono attorneys with high quality, hands-on, relevant and practical training to support their advocacy on behalf of people who are impoverished, disabled or disenfranchised. 
We strive to develop and deliver high quality training programs that respond to the highest priority needs in formats that advocates can take advantage of readily and economically. 

On our website, you will find notices regarding upcoming live training presentations and webcasts as well as links to training that is available for viewing thru the internet. 

Empire Justice is a certified provider of continuing legal education credits in New York State and many of our programs are eligible for credits.

This training will provide case managers with basic information about Social Security's disability benefit program. Read More

Child Care and Child Support
This course covers the fundamentals of the child support requirements for applicants and recipients of child care assistance. Discussions include the active pursuit of child support; good cause exception and determinations; failure to cooperate by applicant or recipient; the child support order; treatment of child support as income; what happens if the non-custodial parent stops paying support; practical difficulties and legal issues that may be raised by petitioners and respondent. Disability Law News - December 2011 :
The Disability Law News is a quarterly newsletter published for DAP advocates. Featured in this issue highlights the announcement of a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for 2012 for monthly Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits. Additional articles discuss ALJ bias and defining the rolls of representatives and ALJs. Also in this issue you will find articles on Regulations, Court Decisions, and Administrative Decisions. Legal Services Journal - Fall 2011 :
The Fall 2011 Legal Services Journal reports on a wide range of poverty law topics. In this free lunch and learn webinar, Barbara Weiner of the Empire Justice Center will discuss immigrant eligibility rules for public health care programs in New York, including Medicaid, Family Health Plus, Child Health Plus and Medicare. We will also include information about access to health care for immigrants who are unable to qualify for public health insurance. Read More

WEBINAR - Medicaid with Medicare for People with HIV
In this free lunch and learn webinar, Cathy Roberts of Empire Justice Center will explore the challenges faced by persons with HIV who become eligible for Medicare, either because of age or disability. We will explain how Medicare and Medicaid coordinate with ADAP, walk through enrollment issues, and present strategies to minimize new liability for Medicare cost-sharing and/or premiums. Read More

Updates in Representing Homeowners in Foreclosure: Emerging Issues, Servicing Regulations and HAMP
Residential foreclosures continue to plague New York State. This training will cover basics for representing homeowners, including fundamentals of the foreclosure process, the mandatory settlement conferences, the federal Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP), and mortgage servicing regulations. Advanced sessions will include best practices for settlement conference advocacy, government enforcement actions and standing to sue in foreclosure.
